If you’re an AI newbie, no problem! Here’s a quick step-by-step guide to getting started with ChatGPT. Here’s what you need to do first:

  • Visit chatgpt.com and create an account. You don’t have to, but you definitely should if you want ChatGPT to remember your conversations. You can use the free version.

  • Start a new chat for each prompt by clicking the “New Chat” button in the upper left corner of your browser.

  • Copy and paste the fabulous preview prompt below, replacing the [bracketed text] with your information.

  • Always review and customize ChatGPT’s suggestions before adding them to your resume.

  • Detailed instructions are provided for each prompt.

Prompt #2: Technical Skills Translation 🔧

What it does: Reworks the technical skills section of your resume, focusing on impact, industry, and relevance

Instructions:

Research 3–5 job descriptions for your target role (in this case, we will focus on a Mechanical Engineer). From these job descriptions, determine the most common desired skills.

💡ProTip: Paste all the job descriptions into ChatGPT and enter this prompt: “Analyze these job descriptions and summarize the top 5-7 common technical skills.”

Next, copy this prompt, paste it into ChatGPT, and replace the info inside the [ ] with what’s relevant to you.

"I'm applying for [target role] positions. I work in the [industry] industry specifically on [sector, product, etc.]. Here's the technical skills section of my resume: [paste technical skills]. Rewrite these technical competencies in industry-standard terminology and suggest any relevant skills I might be missing based on these desired skills [insert researched skills] and current job market demands. If not included, ask me for quantifiable results for each technical skill. Ask any other clarifying questions you need to provide the best possible response.”
